Fishing Report

Thursday, January 1, 2009.  Happy New Year!  Here's hoping the new year brings better fishing than we had during most of 2008.  It seems as though when the economy goes to pot the fishing falls off.  The best fishing along the Outer Banks for the last week or so has been in the area between Cape Point and Hatteras Inlet.  A good number of puppy drum have been caught considering the few fishermen that have been trying their luck.  A few small speckled trout have been caught near the jetties and along South Beach.  Small shark and skate seem to be the catch of the day in the Salvo, Waves, Rodanthe area as well as other areas to the North.  A few stripers have been caught from the Oregon Inlet bridge and by boaters going out of the Inlet and headed north.  Maybe some of them will come further south with the cold air cooling the water down.  We'll let you know when we know they are hitting the beach.

Sunday, December 21, 2008.  Welcome to winter everyone.  It's running a little behind schedule here on the Outer Banks.  It was supposed to arrive at 7:04 this morning but the wind just started to pick up at around 9:00 am and the radar looks like winter will follow the rain due in here in a couple of hours.  Maybe that's what the fish are waiting for.  The last few days, or maybe that's weeks, have been pretty slow in the Salvo, Waves, Rodanthe area.  Fishing has been slow to nonexistent from Oregon Inlet to the Point except for a few speckled trout near the jetties, a few puppy drum, and some big shark around the Point.  A few keeper flounder, sea mullet, and black drum were caught in the hook.  A few sea mullet and black drum were caught in the Frisco area.  We can always hope the next report is better.

Friday, December 19, 2008.  Let's assume that one of the reasons for a lack of fish being caught is because the fishermen are doing their Christmas shopping.  Otherwise, we would have to assume there are not many fish around.  A few each, gray and speckled trout, and several puppy drum were caught north of Cape Point.  Shark were caught on the south side.  Some puppy drum and throw back trout were caught near Ramp 55.  A few yellowfin tuna were caught offshore.  Commercial fishermen caught a good number of king mackerel off Hatteras Inlet.  Just in case we don't get another report, or even if we do, here's wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas.

Sunday, December 14, 2008.  The weather doesn't cooperate for very long before it once again turns against the fishermen.  No fishermen showed up at Rodanthe Pier on Friday; however, on Saturday morning a few speckled trout, small croaker, and some dogfish were decked.  A few dogfish were pulled from the surf between Oregon Inlet and Avon.  Some nice 2 - 4 lb speckled trout were caught around the jetties along with a puppy drum on Saturday morning.  Scattered puppy drum were beached at Cape Point.  A few speckled trout were pulled from the Frisco surf and a puppy drum was caught near the Frisco Pier.  The water temperature at Rodanthe Pier is 53 degrees.

Thursday, December 11, 2008.  Even though the weather was cooperating the last couple of days, fishing continued to be slow.  A few speckled trout were caught around the Buxton jetties, and a 48 inch drum was landed at Cape Point on Tuesday evening.  The forecast for today is miserable weather so the fishing will likely be the same.

Sunday, December 7, 2008.  Fishing continued to be slow along the Salvo, Waves, Rodanthe shore. The only reported catch over the last several days is dogfish.  A few small croaker, speckled trout, and toadfish were decked on Rodanthe Pier.  A 27 lb striper and plenty of dogfish were landed in the Avon area.  A few speckled trout were caught near the Buston jetties and some puppy drum were beached at Cape Point.  A few speckled trout and some puppy drum were caught between Ramp 49 and 55.  A few puppy drum and black drum were caught from the surf in the Hatteras Inlet area.  Boaters out of Hatteras Inlet caught limits of King Mackerel.  The water temperature at Rodanthe Pier is 52 degrees.

Friday, December 5, 2008.  Even though the water has cooled down fishing continues to be slow.  During the first part of the week a 22 pound striper was landed along the Pea Island beach and a few shark were beached in the Salvo, Waves, Rodanthe area.  A few trout and puppy drum were caught in the Avon area.  Yesterday anglers reported some puppy drum, a few speckled trout, and a 20 lb striper in the Avon area.  Rodanthe Pier reported a 10 lb and a 5 lb speckled trout caught earlier in the week but only a few speckled trout yesterday.  Some black drum and speckled trout have been caught around the Buxton jetties.  Some puppy drum, sea mullet, black drum, and a few speckled trout have been caught at the Point.  A few puppy drum have been landed in the Frisco area.  Striper fishing and blue water fishing out of Oregon Inlet have been slow.  A good number of king mackerel and a few wahoo have been caught out of Hatteras Inlet.  The water temperature is down to 52 degrees at Rodanthe Pier.
