Salvo Post Office
No trip to Hatteras Island is complete without a visit to the Salvo Post Office. The privately owned Salvo Post Office has a long history of serving the citizens of the Hatteras Island village of Salvo. When the Post Office was operational it was awarded a certificate for being in a tie as the smallest Post Office in the Country. Quite often you will see either the former Postmaster, Edward Hooper or his brother William Hooper, in the vicinity of the Post Office. Either one of them would be happy to give you a complete history of the Post Office and/or the surrounding area. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The small villages of Salvo, Waves, and Rodanthe are well represented in the National Register of Historic Places. Rodanthe is home of the world famous Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station.
